Bonita to form land plan

City Manager Gary Price will bring a resolution to the council at its 5:30 p.m. March 3 meeting to vote on proceeding with a plan.

A second workshop will be scheduled to discuss the nitty-gritty of how the land should be used, such as if and how it should be developed.

The land was designated as part of Lee County's Density Reduction/Groundwater Resource area - or as environmentally sensitive - in 1990. Development was limited to one unit per 10 acres. Read more of this story here.

Project defies conventional wisdom
It's a tough economy for sure, but a Sarasota developer thinks it's a good time to move forward with development plans in Riverview.

Garrison Developer Group of Florida has started construction on The Preserve at Alafia, a 351-unit apartment complex in a gated community.

The apartments are part of a larger plan for Alafia Crossings, which calls for 100,000 square feet of commercial space and a Holiday Inn. The 39.9-acre waterfront development is on Gibsonton Drive east of Interstate 75. Read more of this story here.

Transportation forum focuses on better Alabama-Florida connection

The forum focused on the “corridor” of State 79 in Florida and Alabama Highway 167 from the Florida line to Troy, AL, and the concept of making the route a continuous four lanes. Bank Watch: Regulators Close Four Banks
The FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with Community & Southern Bank, a newly chartered institution also based in Carrollton, to assume all of the deposits and 11 branches of First National Bank of Georgia. Community & Southern Bank will pay the FDIC a premium of 1.25% to assume the deposits and also agreed to purchase essentially all of the assets. As of Sept. 30, First National Bank of Georgia had $832.6 million in total assets and $757.9 million in total deposits. Read more of this story here.

Parking lot set to be auctioned
The nearly 2-acre Fitzgerald parking lot across from the Forest Hills Orange Line T Station is scheduled to be put out to bid in a foreclosure auction March 3.

The lot has long been eyed by community members and the city as a possible site for redevelopment, and was the subject of a three-year community planning process establishing guidelines for new development in the Forest Hills area. Read more of this story here.

Land deal is a loser for Florida panther
In theory, the way the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service preserved 4,000 acres of raw land east of Fort Myers for the endangered Florida panther seems reasonable. The ranchers who have owned the property since 1947 get to keep grazing their cattle and make a significant amount of money by agreeing to not alter the tract in ways detrimental to the panther.
